Chronograph Basics for Beginners

Chronograph operation has gotten complicated with all the different movement types flying around. Here’s how to actually use this popular complication.

What Is a Chronograph

A stopwatch function built into the watch. Sub-dials track elapsed time. Pushers start, stop, and reset timing. Distinct from standard timekeeping.

Using the Function

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. Top pusher starts and stops. Bottom pusher resets to zero. Sub-dials show minutes and hours elapsed. Center seconds hand measures seconds.

Movement Types

Manual column wheel movements offer smooth operation. Cam-actuated designs cost less. Automatic winding adds convenience. Quartz chronographs provide accuracy.
