  • Cubs' Jack Neely: Added to roster

    Rotowire

The Cubs selected Neely's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

Acquired from the Yankees in the Mark Leiter trade, Neely has collected a 2.42 ERA and 76:17 K:BB over 48.1 innings between the Double- and Triple-A levels in 2024. The 24-year-old will likely be used in low-leverage spots initially, but he could work his way into a more prominent role as part of an unsettled Cubs bullpen. Neely will be making his major-league debut when/if he gets into a game.

  • Cubs' Luis Vazquez: Returns to action at Triple-A

    Rotowire

Triple-A Iowa reinstated Vazquez (undisclosed) from the 7-day injured list Tuesday.

Vazquez hadn't seen any action since July 6 due to an unspecified injury prior to being activated. He's looked sharp at the dish in four games since, going 5-for-14 with three home runs.

  • Cubs' Shota Imanaga: Hard-luck loss Sunday

    Rotowire

Imanaga (9-3) allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out six over five innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Blue Jays.

Imanaga was good aside from a Joey Loperfido solo home run in the second inning, but that ended up being the lone run of the game. Imanaga has allowed 14 runs (10 earned) over 23.2 innings across four starts in August, though his 26:3 K:BB in that same span paints a more encouraging picture. For the year, the southpaw has a 3.11 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 137:20 K:BB through 133.1 innings over 23 starts. He's lined up for a favorable road start in Miami his next time out.

  • Cubs' Isaac Paredes: Scratched with shoulder issue

    Rotowire

Paredes was scratched from Sunday's lineup against the Blue Jays due to right shoulder discomfort, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

It's unclear when Paredes suffered the injury, but he struggled over the past few games and went 0-for-11 with two strikeouts. The 25-year-old will have Monday's team off day to aid in his recovery ahead of Tuesday's series opener versus Detroit. Patrick Wisdom has replaced Paredes at third base for Sunday's contest.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Needs two more rehab starts

    Rotowire

Wicks (oblique) struck out three and allowed four earned runs on five hits and two walks in his second rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Iowa. "He's got a minimum of two [rehab starts] left before he's kind of ready to pitch for us regardless," Cubs manager Craig Counsell told MLB.com on Friday, when asked about a timeline for Wicks to return from the 60-day injured list. "So, he's got time left. I think at the start of it, health is most important. And as we get closer to making a decision, then results start to get factored in more, absolutely."

Wicks has been on the IL since mid-June with a Grade 2 right oblique strain, but he's been able to steadily ramp up his workload over his first two rehab starts, tossing 43 pitches Aug. 10 and 59 pitches Thursday. The results haven't been impressive, however, as Wicks has covered just 3.2 innings between those outings while giving up 10 earned runs on nine hits -- including four home runs -- and four walks. Counsell expressed confidence that Wicks will be able to knock off the rust in his subsequent rehab outings, and the fact that the skipper notes that the lefty will make at least two more starts in the minors suggests that Wicks probably won't be activated until the final weekend of August, at the earliest. Kyle Hendricks should continue to hold down a spot at the back end of the Chicago rotation while Wicks is on the farm.

  • Cubs' Nate Pearson: Earns win in relief Saturday

    Rotowire

Pearson (2-1) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Saturday's 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays. He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out one.

Pearson beat his former team to earn his second win of the season, both of which have come since he got traded to the Cubs on July 27. The righty has also posted a strong 2.89 ERA and 0.86 WHIP across 9.1 innings for Chicago. By contrast, he had a 5.63 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 40 innings for Toronto. It remains to be seen if Pearson can keep this level of play up, but so far he's been a solid addition for the Cubs.

  • Cubs' Porter Hodge: Picks up hold Saturday

    Rotowire

Hodge pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to record a hold in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Blue Jays. He walked two and struck out two.

Hodge worked in front of Jorge Lopez, who picked up the save with regular closer Hector Neris unavailable after throwing 33 pitches in a blown save Friday. It remains to be seen if Neris will return to the role moving forward, but if the Cubs decide to make a change, both Hodge and Lopez could see save opportunities. Tyson Miller would likely be in the mix as well based on his strong play this season. For now, Hodge remains a strong setup option with a 2.15 ERA and 34 strikeouts across 29.1 innings this year, to go along with a team-high nine holds.

  • Cubs' Ian Happ: Homers again in win

    Rotowire

Happ went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Blue Jays

Happ launched a 413-foot leadoff home run to give the Cubs the early lead. After going just 1-for-18 to open August, the 30-year-old has gone deep five times while registering a hit in eight consecutive contests. On the season, he is hitting .233 with 22 homers, 69 RBI, 70 runs scored and nine steals across 490 plate appearances.

  • Cubs' Jorge Lopez: Earns third save

    Rotowire

Lopez earned the save in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Blue Jays, allowing a solo home run and striking out three in the ninth inning.

Primary closer Hector Neris threw 33 pitches in a blown save Friday, so Lopez was summoned to protect a 3-1 lead in the ninth inning Saturday. He allowed a leadoff home run to Addison Barger but responded by striking out the next three batters he faced. On the season, the 31-year-old owns a 2.44 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 42:18 K:B across 48 innings.

  • Cubs' Justin Steele: Start shortened by rain

    Rotowire

Steele did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Blue Jays, walking one and striking out three across two scoreless innings.

Steele was pulled with a 1-0 lead after the game was delayed twice due to rain. He entered Saturday having logged two consecutive quality starts and looked strong in his only two innings of work, throwing 23 of 36 pitches for strikes and generating five whiffs. On the season, the southpaw owns a 3.10 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 115:32 K:BB across 116 innings and lines up for a favorable matchup with the Marlins next week.

  • Cubs' Tyson Miller: Picks up win Friday

    Rotowire

Miller (4-1) tossed a scoreless 10th inning to earn the win out of the bullpen Friday against the Blue Jays.

After Hector Neris blew the save by allowing three runs in the ninth inning, Miller picked Chicago up with a much better 10th, needing just five pitches to shut the door on Toronto. The righty has been solid this season, as he now has a 1.83 ERA and 0.77 WHIP across 44.1 innings for the Cubs and Mariners. If Neris gets pulled from the closer role due to his middling performance, Miller could be a candidate to see save opportunities, though Porter Hodge is probably ahead of him right now in the bullpen pecking order.

  • Cubs' Miguel Amaya: Hits fifth home run Friday

    Rotowire

Amaya went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-6, 10-inning win over the Blue Jays.

Amaya has only five home runs this season in 86 games, though he's gone deep twice in 10 contests so far this month. The catcher is batting .258 in August with a .797 OPS, which are both ahead of his season-long rates. Amaya will see his fantasy appeal increase if he can maintain his recent level of performance, as he's fairly locked into the No. 1 role behind the plate for the Cubs, with only veteran Christian Bethancourt joining him on the roster currently.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Homers in Friday's win

    Rotowire

Crow-Armstrong went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run in Friday's 7-6, 10-inning win over the Blue Jays.

Crow-Armstrong got the start in center field and blasted his fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning. Two of those long balls have come in the past four games. Crow-Armstrong was ultimately lifted for a pinch hitter in the ninth, and Cody Bellinger finished the game in center as he saw his first outfield action since returning from the injured list in late July. If Bellinger sees more time in center moving forward, Crow-Armstrong could see his playing time decrease, though he's at least a strong candidate to serve as a pinch runner or defensive replacement on days he doesn't start.

  • Cubs' Cody Bellinger: Pops 13th home run

    Rotowire

Bellinger went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 7-6, 10-inning win over the Blue Jays.

Bellinger got the scoring started for the Cubs, launching his 13th home run of the season in the first inning with a runner on to make it 2-0. The 29-year-old also played in the outfield for the first time since returning in late July from a fractured middle finger on his left hand. Bellinger started in right but later shifted over to center, and if he starts seeing more regular time in center moving forward, Pete Crow-Armstrong could see his role shrink.
